Another Trip: Kain Batik Workshop by Museum Tekstil Jakarta

The Jakarta Textile Museum located in Tanah Abang is a cultural education institution that serves to preserve the existence of traditional textiles, one of heritage is batik.


This museum is known as home to a collection of home-made batik fabrics.

Besides being a collection house, the museum also opens batik workshop activity. The batik pendopo at the Jakarta Textile Museum is one of the best places to learn batik. Through this activity, visitors will be taught about the pattern of drawing batik, using canting.


The price of admission to the Jakarta Textile Museum is IDR 5,000 for adults, IDR 3,000 for students and IDR 2,000 for students. For batik workshop, the museum usually opens workshop hours every Tuesday and Sunday from 09.00 to 15.00 WIB.


Pendopo Batik architecture is dominated by wood, making the batik atmosphere more calm and comfortable. You won't feel the hustle and bustle of Jakarta City. All batik facilities have been provided in the pendopo, from fabrics, canting, to colouring materials commonly used for batik. The batik works that have been made by visitors, of course, can be taken home to be made as merchandise.

The types of courses provided are divided into two, namely the beginner course and advanced courses. To be able to take part in batik workshop, visitors can reach costs starting from IDR 40,000 per person. Visitors can also learn to make batik to produce their own products.

Besides the pendopo Batik, in the museum complex, there is a Batik Gallery. Here visitors will be spoiled with various types of batik collections. Starting from ancient batik to contemporary batik from time to time and centuries to centuries.


The more interesting it is, in this museum, you will be entertained by the existence of a 2,000 m² Natural Coloring Park which is overgrown with various colour-producing plants for use as batik colouring process. These plants include the African Tulip Tree, Caesarweed, Daun Suji, and many more.


If you want to gain knowledge about batik and textiles, you can visit the library. This collection of books in the library is able to answer your curiosity about traditional batik and textiles from all over the archipelago.


For tourists from outside the city who want to visit this museum can use the commuter line train and get off at Tanah Abang station. From there, you are close enough. You can choose to continue the journey on foot or take advantage of online motorcycle taxi transportation that can be easily obtained in Jakarta such as Go-Jek or Grab.
